The news coming out of the Autumn SIA Conference at Sheffield last month was very straightforward. The Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) was here to stay until – and if – The Security Regulation Alliance come up with some acceptable Industry led alternative to the SIA. Our supportive views on the ACS are shown in the November issue of Risk UK, but the message is very clear. The Industry is certainly not yet ready to make the sort of changes it talked about so enthusiastically no less than 12 months ago, and why is that? This Industry has always had a real problem in talking as one voice and if that is the case – and I am pretty sure it still is – then this problem is going to test it like never before!
We would like to congratulate the following members of ACS Pacesetters who were winners at this year’s Security Excellence Awards held at London’s Park Lane Hilton on the evening of the 19th October.
The second Security Industry Authority conference of the year was opened and chaired by Dave Humphries, Director of Compliance, Intelligence and Communication, who welcomed delegates to the Sheffield venue. He stressed the importance of industry input as the SIA develops plans for the future of regulation for the private security industry.
The transfer window closed for Premier League Football Clubs at 11 p.m on the 31st August and by then a sum of well over 400 million pounds had changed hands between top flight clubs throughout the world in the few months between the end of last season and the end of August 2011. Many of us still look in horror at the amounts being paid for top class players and the weekly salaries which they allegedly earn. Notwithstanding that, our greatest criticism is reserved for the players’ agents who seem to pick up vast sums of money for what appears to be very little input; of course that is not totally true because the agent has the task of parading his or her charge in front of a number of prospective and eager buyers in order to get the best price for both the player and themselves. The introduction of oligarchs from Russia and the Middle East means that top flight football is currently awash with money – that is until the bubble eventually bursts!
